Recently, We were introduced to Alexandra Catalano, a 20-something author, certified health consultant and nutritionist.  Alexandra recently graduated from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California (USC) and then pursued further education in nutrition.

"Alexandra Catalano is shown talking about the Freshman 15"

At some point in time during her years at USC, Alexandra doubtless noticed the phenomenon that has come to be known as the "Freshman 15."  Meaning? Due to late night eating binges, a lack of exercise and dining halls where all-you-care-to-eat rules, many first year college students gain an average of 15 pounds. Copious amounts of beer and other alcoholic drinks only compound the problem.

Now, Alexandra has put onto the market an interesting book, From Beer Bongs to Broccoli. The College Kid’s Guide to Health and Wellness," available at Amazon.com.

Alexandra’s premise is that the perfect starting point in your life to develop good eating habits, and become conscious of fitness and vitality, is the college years.  Yet, somehow, this message has been lost upon today’s college students who apparently gain up to 1/2 pound a week.  As a cosmetic plastic surgery instructor at both USC and the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) we have seen the Freshman 15 in the young college students known to us, and have never quite figured out why. Perhaps it's because they are away from the wiser heads of their parents and do as they please for the first time – pound on top of pound.

Alexandra also put up an on-point website – www.eatcute.net which provides plenty of tips for young people on how and what to eat, a few workout and fashion tips, all while facing the other temptations and rigors of college. We recommend her website highly. Be sure and watch the video that tells how eating "cute" came to be.

During our own college days, weight gain was not in vogue. But then maybe that's because we burned off a lot of energy walking up and down the hills of the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Plus, we constantly burned calories staying warm: the weather there was freezing cold most of the time!

We do recommend Alexandra’s website, www.eatcute.net.  Check it out and, in particular, note her video that tells the story of how all this "cuteness" began.

Alexandra is engaging, savvy, and herself embodies “cute.”
