"Pianist Liberrace shows his face after cosmetic surgery"

Liberace, After Cosmetic Surgery

Television is great for impact, but you'll find more details about the pianist's cosmetic plastic surgery in the Scott Thorson book Behind the Candelabra about life with Liberace.

Thorson was Liberace's driver, companion and live-in boyfriend for five years.

(Read our blog post about our short association with Jack Startz, M.D., Liberace's plastic surgeon.)

When Liberace was 59, he saw a TV interview showing close ups of his aging face, decided on facial plastic surgery and was referred to Dr. Startz. From there, events departed the usual, customary surgeon – patient relationship.

Liberace asked for a complete face lift, but also asked for a very unusual extra: he wanted boyfriend Thorson made over into a younger version of himself so the boyfriend could pass as the son of the 40-year-older Liberace.

In virtually all cases, cosmetic plastic surgeons are duty bound to make sure patients, and patients only, want surgery for themselves. Plastic surgeons are highly adept at spotting cases in which, say, a socially conscious mother wants her teen to be more handsome or beautiful while the teen is saying “whatever.”

Nonetheless, a month after Liberace went under the knife, Dr. Startz reworked Thorson's nose, created higher cheekbones, performed chin augmentation and placed a cleft in the boyfriend's chin.

According to sources close to Dr. Startz, Liberace had a lower face lift, upper and lower eyelid lifts and, later a skin peel done by an aesthetician.  Liberace, who was almost totally bald, balked at removing his wig for the operating room. But plastic surgeons know infection is a major concern so the star had to be "persuaded" before surgery could start.

Liberace and Thorson stayed in Beverly Hills after surgery so that Dr. Startz could change the pianist's bandages daily.

Having had the attention of a Master surgeon, Liberace looked much, much better although Thorson later wrote Liberace slept with his eyes partially open. If so, that's a major misstep for an upper eyelid lift and means the surgeon removed too much of the sagging eyelid skin.

Between the lines, the reader can see Dr. Startz was developing other personal problems. For instance, the surgeon was supplying Thorson with a concoction of cocaine, amphetamines and Quaaludes so the boyfriend could lose weight.

Thorson writes that was the beginning of his own drug abuse problems.
